n the 5th century BC people
started to build at Hersones where Sevastopol is situated now.
In 988 Sevastopol was concurred by Prince Volodymyr Svyatoslavovych, who did introduce the
Orthodox church. at May 1783 the first ships of the Black Sea Float did
enter her Buchta. Today you still find the ships of this enormous fleet
in the Akhtialsky harbour.
Even in Sovjet times,
Sevastopol was one of the most important harbour cities of the USSR.
Many monuments still remember everyone about this fact. In that
time, everybody from outside, even the Russians them selves needed a
visa to get in or out of Sevastopol because there where many secrets
to see in town.
The city did not only
see rising, but during the Russian– Turkish war from 1854 – 1855 and
WO II from 1941 – 1944 it was completely destroyed.

Sevastopol is situated at the Crimean peninsula, with a
population of about 378.500 inhabitants in winter and in summer about
450.000 and is like all important cities in the world, for example Rome, Paris or Istanbul, build on seven hills.
It is
next to Moscow and St. Peter on of the most famous places in the former
USSR. Crimea has one of the most fantastic coast areas in Europe. At
this beautiful peninsula exist a nice beach-, dancing-, nightclub life
that was only there for the high placed Russians who could get a visa
for this place. From Starting May until October, there is a lot of
summer activity.
Sevastopol is the
biggest non-freezing fishing and trading port on the Black Sea The
trading and fishing port, industrial, scientific and technical
centre on the peninsula, the most famous resort and cultural and
historical spot in the South of Ukraine, which is situated in the
South West of Crimea.
In the area of
Sevastopol the climate is rather mild, sea kind, the temperature
continental in the foothills, the same with subtropical
Mediterranean type in the South-western side. The average monthly
air temperature during the year is always above the zero level. The
coldest month is February (-8, +14), the warmest one is July (up to
34 C). The temperature of the upper stratum of the water in the
Black Sea at the coasts of Sevastopol during the Year is always
warmer then the zero level. The atmospheric precipitation are not
normally regular or predictable. The driest month is September (24,6
mm), the wettest is November (83 mm). the territory subordinate to
Sevastopol City
Council is 1079 sq. km. , which makes 0,143% from the total
territory of Ukraine. The territory includes: 864 sq. km. of land;
215 sq. km. of bay area. The territory of Sevastopol is larger
than that of Moscow or New York. The length of the
Shoreline is 152 km.
29% of the territory
is occupied by agricultural lands, nearly 40% by forest, 25% by
industrial and residential areas. 6% is occupied by the naval base
of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation and the Naval
forces of Ukraine. Sevastopol is divided in the districts of
Balaklava, Gagarinsky, Leninsky and Nokhimovsky.
The population is at
the moment 378.500 people.
In the city's
economy, 175.400 people are employed and most of them (36.900
people) work in trade and in the restaurant and hotel business. In
the industry 28.00 persons, in transportation and communication
enterprises 18.800 people, in educational institutions 13.700
people, in public health services 10.800, in administration bodies
7.400 and there are 1.902 people unemployed. In Sevastopol there are
269.953 Russians living, 84.420 Ukrainians and also representatives
of about 100 other countries.
54% of Sevastopol
inhabitants are women and 45,7% are men. 359.130 people are citizens
of Ukraine and 1.889 persons are citizens of Russia, citizens of
other CIS countries are 158. People without citizenship are 1.141.
90.5% of the
population speak Russian.
In Sevastopol are 75
schools, 1 university, 3 institutes, about 20 branches or faculties
of Russian and Ukrainian higher education institutes, 7 higher
education institutes with the 1st and 2nd levels of accrediting, 6
trade schools, 9 schools of aesthetic education, 69 libraries, 4
theatres, about 2000 monuments and 13 state health centres.
The 223 trolley
buses, 149 buses and 208 minibuses transported 166.608.400
passengers in 2003.
With the decision
of the government of the Ukraine in 1996, the town Sevastopol is
opened to be visited by foreigners and the foreign ships are allowed
to visit the ports of Sevastopol. There are plenty of the advantages
in the way of developing the region as a major trading and
industrial centre, as well as tourist centre of the South of Ukraine
due its convenient situation, mild climate conditions, plenty
recourse and the experience in the international activities.
From Sevastopol you
may reach the whole peninsula very easy for a lot of excursions.
From the year
2004 on it is even the main tourist city of Ukraine.
